Motorcycle Repair: replacing left rear turn signal, rear fender, lady rider

Question
Hi Chris, this question is probably way to basic to be interesting but...I am trying to replace the turn signal on my '98 Yamaha Vstar Custom. (yes I'm a brand new rider) My repair shop doesn't have an opening for 2 weeks! So I tried to do this the other day...I got the old housing off but i couldn't see where the light plugs into. Somewhere in the taillight but i am not sure how to get to it. How much do I have to take apart to get to it? Is this something I should even attempt? I am pretty mechanicaly inclined but I have very little experiene with motorcyles! Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hi Sue.
It's good to see a lady rider out there that is actually willing to do her own work (of any kind) on her machine.  Good for you.

As far as the wiring for the rear signals, you will need to remove the seat to access that area and you may also need to sit down and get under the rear fender as well.  You will want to refer to the repair manual for specifics, but you should see the wiring route and determine which set is for which signal.

Good luck.
