Motorcycle Repair: battery eliminators, battery eliminators, fxe

i have a 1978 1/2  fxe with points .would like to eliminate the battery useing a capacitor , but am getting many diff. answers on how or not how it can be done ,how would you do it  ? and what is needed for electrics? can it be done with out a kick ?

I think what you are refering to is using a magneto with a battery elimator. You have to have somthing create the spark for the coil and thats what the magneto does. The electrics also run off the magneto after the bike is started. You will not be able to use a electric start. You need a battery for that, so the bike will always be kick. Magnetos are quit expensive and everything has to be set just right for the bike to start after a few kicks. The sportsters from the 60's had mags and they were always a bear to start.
