Motorcycle Repair: oil leak, heritage softtail, repair attempts

Question
Mike, I have a 1998 Heritage Softtail 4600 miles, other than normal maintainance no major repairs. I have noticed an oil leak. When I ride longer trips of 40 plus miles at 65 mph or greater. I replaced the oil cap because a large protion of the oil ends up splatered on the oil tank. I still have a leak and can not locate it. Is it possible this is coming from the air intake, I noticed the breather tube that goes down to the frame and it was not in an area it could drain or breath properly. We were in the mountians of N.M. and a friend had oil coming out of his air cleaner, someone siad it may have had to do with the thin air in the area. Any ideas before I undergo any costly repair attempts.

Thank you   Allen

Answer
Here is the best way I have found to find a oil leak. First clean the motor of all oil. Get some deoderant that has baby powder in it. Spray the motor with it and go for a short ride. Check the motor and where there is a leak the powder will turn black.
I would suppect that it is coming from the breather tube. The breather lets the heads vent and a small amount of misty oil goes with it. I would run the breather tube down to the underside of the bike and you shouldnt have the problem.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
