Motorcycle Repair: timing, punch marks, mid nineties

Question
Mark it's me again! When I took off the timing belt from my honda st1100 the crank moved and is out of whack.I had the bent valves replaced at a machine shop.I installed the head then proceeded to put the cams in per manual.i cannot get the engine to turn over(by hand(.when I put the t-1 mark to the alignment arrow and the cams in with the index lines out and the left cams in with the lines out i cant move the motor.I know there are two sets of timing marks(lines and punch marks but I can not get the timing right.can you tell me what to do from the start if the crank is moved when the belt is off and the cams are vot in .Please help i'm totally frustrated-Dave

Answer
Hi Dave,

Sorry for the long delay in responding. My PC has been down for several days.

I cannot remember the procedure for timing belts on the ST's. I haven't done one since mid nineties. I've checked on line with negative results, and will continue checking.

I think you're doing the procedure ok, but I suspect the cams are 180 degrees out or opposite TDC when aligning timing marks.

Please keep me advised. MY PC is running well, so no delays are expected. Use my personal email for best service: mshively1@woh.rr.com
