Motorcycle Repair: Out of Storage, insect nests, piston rings

Question
Hi there

I have a z650 b1 (1977) which has been in storage for 3 and a half years. It was a good runner when stored but unfortunately I didn't do anything to ensure it's well being during storage exept give it a good dose of wd40 all over. So my question is this; what should I be doing before I even think about trying to start her again after all this time ?

many thanks

Jonathan

Answer
Hi Jonathon,

Check valves for rusting to their seats. Check piston rings for rusting to cylinder walls. Clean or replace spark plugs. Check interior fuel tank for rust. Clean varnish from carbs. Change oil and filter. Check for rat and insect nests in air box and everywhere. Clean or replace air filter. Rats enjoy eating wires, check wiring. Lube or replace chain. If chain need replaced, also replace both sprockets or old parts will quickly wear out new parts. Lube cables. Replace battery.

There you go, pal.
