Motorcycle Repair: seting timing, flywheel alignment, chain tensioners

Question
G'day Bill
firstly thanks for taking the time to help, I have a CT200 Ag Bike made for the australian market (90/91) I have repaced the timing chain tensioners but now need to set the timing. I could work it out logically (in light of the NON existence of a service manual and utter lack of links at the honda page) but would prefer a tip from a pro. Even a link to a data page would be a start. The engine is a 200cc 4 stroke. K 16 is stamped on the casing I think its a pretty simple engine but I've just never done it before.
Again, thanks if you have the time,
regards

Answer
Vince, setting cam timing on a single is pretty simple.

Any info on XR/XL200s would be similar to your machine.

Place piston to TDC position (T mark on the flywheel alignment).

Check cam sprocket for punch mark or alignment lines. If punch mark (0) then place it at 12 o'clock position and turn camshaft so lobes are DOWN (inverted V). Install camsprocket on camshaft with bolts. There may be an alignment mark on the upper cam cover. If there are alignment lines, they usually go parallel to the cylinder head surface.

In this position you can adjust the valves to .002" intake and .003" exhaust clearances.

When you turn the motor over ONE turn, the valves will be at overlap (both slightly open) and you can "feel" the motor sort of "stop" due to the balanced position of the camshaft/rockers when lobes are in upright V position.

Be sure that camchain is tensioned properly and then you can finish buttoning it up for installation.
