Motorcycle Repair: Kawasaki 250z, local bike shop, bolt head

Question
I'm trying to replace a camchain and I can't remove the alternator face to get to the sprocket. I was thinking you possibly had to remove it by turning it off by pinning it down with 2 holes that are in the face plate, but I don't know how to do it at all and I'm wondering if theres a tool to get these faceplates off if they dont have a bolt holding them on.

Sorry, I may be a little bad with terminology because I can't find a workshop manual.

Answer
Jared,
I think you may be referring to the stator flywheel, the bowl shaped cover with magnets inside that is pressed onto the crankshaft end and retained with a large diameter nut or smaller bolt head.  You must hold the stator firmly either w/ a strap wrench or with a large screw driver place carefully through one of the holes and braced carefully against the engine case (not any critical parts!) and loosten the nut or bolt. Be aware that the bolt may very well be a LEFT HANDED thread and loostens CLOCKWISE.  After you remove the nut or bolt you will need a magneto/flywheel puller.  Go to your local bike shop armed w/ the model and year as well as a good memory of what the center of the flywheel looks like.  You should be able to buy a generic one for about $15.

Hope this helps,
Mike
