Motorcycle Repair: Power loss, suzuki intruder 800, mechanical description

Question
Hi Chris,
I have a 2000 Suzuki Intruder 800 with about 6,000 miles. While riding today it seemed that the bike lost power when the revs got high. The bike kept reving faster when I gave it throttle but did not gain speed appropriately(so it seemed at the time). I took it for another ride and now I'm not sure if I'm imagining things but it sure seems like it has lost it's kick and seems to flatten out way too soon. I can still ride it ok and was going to take it in for service. Knowing that I'll probably be on a long list wanting their bikes back yesterday I thought I'd ask if you knew what could cause this first. I'm fairly new to motorcycles so sorry for my less than 'mechanical' description of the problem.
Thanks,
Pete

Answer
Hi Pete.
If the revs went up, but the speed went down, or you are not getting the same speed at certain rpms that you used to, then you have a problem with the clutch.  It is not completely disengaging or it is slipping.  You probably need the clutchplates and springs replaced.

Good luck.
