Motorcycle Repair: Honda Trouble Shooting., starter solenoid, carbon brushes

Question
I have a 1981 Honda CM400. I just took it out of storage from the winter. I turned the key, the headlight came on, but when I hit the starter button, nothing happened. Actually, the head light went out, but nothing else. I charged the battery, and tried again. Same results. I was able to push start it, and it ran fine. Once I shut it off, nothing. I bought a new battery, trickle charged it for 12 hours and tried again. Still the same results. Any ideas where I should start troubleshooting at? I do not have a manual for this bike. I bought it used for $500. Does this bike have a starter? If so, where would I find it? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Joe

Answer
Hi Joe,

Q: Any ideas where I should start troubleshooting at?
A: Look into the starter and starter solenoid as possible causes. Check for voltage at the starter solenoid. The solenoid should click once with 12VDC momentarily applied to its primary winding (small leads). Remove starter motor and disassemble. Inspect carbon brushes for proper length/wear.

Q: Does this bike have a starter? Where would I find it?
A: Yes. Look for the starter motor on the front of the engine below cylinders.
