Motorcycle Repair: cb 550 four drive chain, cb 550 four, mint condition

Question
falcon, i have a 1975 cb 550 four in mint condition, but when i slow down whether going fast or slow it sound like the transmision is whining whatever gear i'm in . i put it up on the center stand last night and revved it up in all gears and noticed the chain jumping up and down at the front sprocket. slack on the chain is ok chain is in good shape could the front sprocket be bad or do you think it could be the transmission? bike seems to have been babied.

Answer
Hi Phillip.
Were both sprockets replaced when the chain was?  They should have been.  If they weren't, then they are probably worn, but I don't believe that to be the cause of your whine sound.

The sound would be coming from the transmission.  Normally, the gears will make a sound like that if they are nice and tight.  If it is causing you concern, then take it to a mechanic to assess.

Good luck.
