Motorcycle Repair: coils, suzuki t20, grand scheme of things

Question
I am rebuilding a 1966 Suzuki T20 Hustler and I have an assortment of ignition coils I would like to use.The problem is I do not know the correct values for the primary and secondery resistance values. The manuals I have {3} all have different numbers.1 to 3 ohms in one.3 to 5 in another for the primary.6k to 11k and 9k to 15k for secondary in another. What should be the correct values? I am still using the points ignition system.

Answer
Serge,

Tough call.  I'd trust the higher resistance spec. simply because when coils fail their resistance jumps down to zero providing no control of the current.  Of course coils can fail due to overly high resistance but the latter is more common.  Although both sets of specs. seem quite different, they are infact not to far apart from each other in the grand scheme of things.  If your readings fall in the window of .3 to 5 (prim.) and 6,000-15,000 (sec.) you should be ok.  Readings can also be affected by tempature.

Hope this helps,
Mike
