Motorcycle Repair: charging system, ac volts, stator

Question
I got up to ride this morning and <clicl<click nada. I recharged the battery rechecked the fluid and started the bike (96 fatboy). Bike started and ran fine. but showed no charge. I made the mistake of calling Harley. They right off said "Stator" I unplugged the regulator at the crankcase and tested AC volts. I don't have a tach so I can only guess at RPM. 4 or 5 volts at idle and about 26 or so at (guess 2000). How can I be sure what the problem is before spending? I don't have a test light but the regulator test showed unknown from one pin and 4 or 5 MV at the other. Ground is good. Thanks

Answer
Start by checking the battery with the bike running. You should show around 13.5 volts at around 2000 RPM. If not then its either the stator or the voltage regulator.
To test the stator, first start by checking for a ground. Using a OHM's meter, unplug the regulator. At the pins on the stator test to see if its grounded. If it is them its bad. Now start the bike, you should show around 60 AC volts at 2000 rpms. If it doesnt pass either test then the stator is bad. If it passes them the regulator is bad.
Good lucka and happy riding
