Answer
Hi Robert.
 The first 2 things you did absolutely right.  You did not, immediately assume and replace the battery, and you bought a charger, which everyone should have anyway.

Now you need to check the battery.  Use a hygrometer to check the state of each cel in the battery.  If even 1 cel is bad, then replace the battery.  If the battery is 2 or more years old, then replace it.  The battery provides 2 things; 1) voltage and 2) amperage.  It is the amps that the starter needs as much as the volts and a bad battery, while showing 12 VDC but having 1 or more bad cels, will not produce enough amps to both turn the starter and provide power to the ignition system.

In addition to the battery, you need to check the following;

1) Water in the fuel.  Drain the float bowls and some of the tank into a mason jar or other clean, dry clear glass container.  If you see bubbles at the bottom, then you have water in the fuel.  It will always go to the lowest point.

2) Is the valve timing due or overdue?

3) Are the header pipes loosened up at all at the head?

4) Does the bike sit all winter in storage?  If so, then pull and properly clean the carbs.  Dirty, gummed up carbs can create a whole series of problems that would be avoided if the bike is stored without fuel in them.

Start with all of that and let me know what you find.
Good luck.
