Motorcycle Repair: cbr 600 starter starter relay problem?, starter relay, starter button

Question
hi,
I have a 91 cbr 600 f2.  The bike was idling in the drive the other day for about 20 minutes and suddenly quit.   Now it won't turn over at all.  checked the fuses (all ok).  The battery is fine.  i messed with the starter relay a little, and i could hear it rapidly clicking when i hit the starter button, then it quit clicking at all.  does it sound like the relay is bad or is it the starter?  would either of these cause the bike to abruptly quit like that?

Answer
Hi Mike,

Mike: I messed with the starter relay a little, and i could hear it rapidly clicking when i hit the starter button, then it quit clicking at all. Does it sound like the relay is bad or is it the starter?

Mark: Relay should click with 12vdc applied. Avoid keeping the starter button depressed. The contacts inside the relay may arc and become badle pitted, or welded together.

Mike: Would either of these cause the bike to abruptly quit like that?

Mark: Doubtful that this caused the engine to stall. These components are only in use during starting.

I suspect the engine stalled for other reasons. It's difficult to guess at the cause. Need to run checks to learn what happened.

Does this mean during starting, the engine rotates, but won't start? Or, the engine will not rotate at all?
