Motorcycle Repair: 1982 Suzuki GS750E, air screw, gsx750r

Question
I just purchased a 1982 Suzuki GS750E with 8400 miles on it.  The guy who owned it before me also had an 86 GSX750R that had been in an accident.  He decided to put the carburetor set-up and the 4-into-1 exhaust from the GSXR onto the GS.  It seems to idle fine and it runs well.  I feel a slight hesitation right at the beginning of 3rd and 4th gear like its either getting to much gas and its drowning or its not getting enough gas to accelerate so it bogs slightly then comes on strong.  I know its an unorthodoxed setup but any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated

Answer
Hi Rich,

Bogging is associated with rich air-fuel mixtures. It should be occurring in all gears because carburetors don't differintiate between gears.

The set-up described may work well. You may need to tune the carbs a bit to get the mix just right. Take spark plug readings to learn what is happening in the combustion process. I would look at carb synchronization and pilot air screw adjustmet first. Then, if necessary, adjust or re-jet as needed.

Valve clearances must be within specs before tuning carbs.
