Motorcycle Repair: Idling problem..., air fuel mixture, ironhead chopper

Question
Hey Mike...I have a 1975 Ironhead chopper...will start just fine .. but is a little strange..I pull the choke out all the way but as soon as it starts I have to immediately shut down choke and rev the motor untill it warms up or else it will die..about 5 min.. runs strong throughout the rpm range...but will not hold idle untill it warms up...and if I try to use the choke it dies I have to keep reving the motor or else it dies...I believe I have a Keihen butterfly carb on it ..although according to the manual I should have a Bendix..I'm used to the Evo's so this bike is gonna be a learning experience..any pointers you could give me would be helpfull..I am going to pull the carb and clean it .. check the jetting and inspect carb and manifold for airleaks..and have already replaced the plugs and points..Thanks..Mark

Answer
Sounds like your air/fuel mixture jet might be a littel plugged. I would remove the carb and rebuild it. Make sure you soak it well in carb cleaner. Also while it is off replace the o-rings in the intake manifold. Your jetting is going to be correct if the bike runs fine after it warms up.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
