Motorcycle Repair: 4 speed transmission, speed transmission, 2 pints

Question
1977 FL all original
How are you supposed to check the fluid level in the transmission?  The book says you're supposed to from dry fill to the bottom of the filler hole but this seems to be too much in a transmission.  Is this the proper level it should be at during normal operation?

Thank you.
Sincerely,
Scot Costa

Answer
It should hold 1 1/2 pints of oil. There should be a plug in the side of the kicker cover. Holding the bike upright remove the plug. Fill the trans until the oil starts to come out the hole. Put the plug back in and your ready to go.
Good luck and happy riding
