Motorcycle Repair: Honda CB700SC (1985), worst case scenario, honda cb700sc

Question
After a high speed freeway run the top end ticks, but 30 seconds or so the ticking stops.
Any other time there is no ticking from the engine.
This engine has hydraulic valves.
I though that it could be the oil pump having trouble keeping the top end wet ?

Answer
Hi Mickey.
Does this ticking occur at initial startup as well?
Is it possible that there is water in the oil?

This could be as simple as needing sufficient time to warm up, or it could be something that needs to be adjusted or flushed out.  It could be that a component at the valve side of the lifter is wearing down and after it heats up enough expands to take up the tiny amount of distance tht it has worn down.  Worst case scenario, the pump may need, or is starting on it's way to need, replaceing.

If it's the original oil pump, then it could be worn and not able to pump quite as much oil as it did when the bike was new, even though it works fine the rest of the time.  If that is the case, then that ticking is the period where the pump is "catching up", as it were.

To be honest, that is all guesswork based only on the limited info available to me about the problem.  If it only happens during the first minute after a high speed run, then you may want your local mechanic to give it a try and see what he thinks.  The most likely thing, though, is that the oil pump is starting to get old and just doesn't pump quite as much as it used to.  This is not critical right now, but should be checked out to prevent an damage to the system.  Particularly if you do a lot of high speed riding with the bike.

Good luck.
