Motorcycle Repair: rebuilding, ring groove, cylinder wall

Question
I am rebuilding an old yammer hammer enduro I don't know the year but it was licensed in 73 and in 76.
I took the top end off and cleaned it all out and look to see if the cylinder was scored it wasn't I put the top end and jug back on and tried to see if there was spark but the kick start went about 1/3 of the way down and stopped like it was frozen.  what is the matter with my kickstart

Answer
Chris,
It is possible you either droped something into the crankcase that is obstructing the crankshaft (always stuff a clean rag down there after removing cylinder) or that something went wrong while sliding the cylinder back on.  It is possible to slide the piston back up into the barrel with one or both of the piston rings positioned incorrectly.  There is a peg in the ring groove that is meant to fall between the ring break and to keep the ring from spinning around.  If the ring is riding over the peg OR if the ring broke it can wedge itself agaist the cylinder wall and then into a port when cranked over.  Carefully dissasemble and check it out.

Hope this helps,
Mike
