Motorcycle Repair: Chris, I just got a 1983..., clutch cable, clutch plates

Chris,  I just got a 1983 Yamaha 750 Virago that has been sitting for several years. The engine runs but cannot shift into gear without engine stalling (can hear gears grinding). What are the probable causes. The clutch plates and discs and springs look ok and clutch seems to work.                                                                                             Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill.
 You say that the clutch works, but does it work properly?  Have you adjusted the cable?

How about those plates and springs.  Did you measure them all for wear as per the specs in repair manual?

You could have worn springs and/or the clutch cable could be out of adjustment or stretched too far and thus needing replacement.

Start with those things and let me know what happens.  We will proceed from there if necessary.
