Motorcycle Repair: Honda Leak, oil leaks, starter bike

Question
I'm a new rider...and I recently bought a 72 Honda CB350. It's in fantastic condition...and it's a good starter bike for me. I've notice a small (quarter sized) spot of oil below the bike whenever I move it. Where should I begin my hunt for the leak...what do you think would be the likely the cause? Is this something I can correct myself? I figure...if a small oil leak is all that's wrong with this old bike...I should count my blessings.

Answer
Hi John,

Sounds as if you have a decent motorcycle. A classic and in good condition.

Start by wiping the bottom of the engine dry. You may use brake cleaner if necessary. I use Dr. School's foot powder spray to detect and help find oil leaks. The spray costs about $6 per can. It sprays on white and oil is easily seen seeping through powder. Or you can wipe it dry and watch for soure of leak.

Once leak is found, determine if its a oil seal, loose fastener, or damaged gasket. Fix as necessary.
