Motorcycle Repair: Oil light -->> 2001 Kawasaki Ninja EX500R, kawasaki ninja, crank case

Question
Hi Chris,
I have a 2001 Kawasaki Ninja EX500R and after a recent minor lay down on the right hand side my oil indicator light stays on while the bike is running.  Also, when I have the bike up on center stand and I look through the oil window at the bottom of the crank case while it is running I see no movement of oil.  Until I know how serious the problem is I have not been running it long in this condition as to avoid any further damage.  Any ideas or recommendations would be awesome!
Thanks in advance,
--Bill

Answer
Hi Bill.
You won't necessarily see any movement of the oil in the Inspection window.

That window is to visually check oil level when the bike is stopped and turned off.

The oil light is what we all know as an "idiot light"  It is used to let you know that the oil level is lower than minimum specs.  My guess is that something is shorted either in the sensor or the wiring.  Go over that circuit both visually and with a meter to see where it is shorting, if at all.  If it is the oil level sensor, then you either have to live with it or replace it.

Check it out and let me knw what you find.
Good luck.
