Motorcycle Repair: Missfiring Maxim, yamaha maxim, pin connector

Question
Hi Mark,
Firstly thanks for offering your help. Im currently having an issue with a 1985 Yamaha Maxim X imported from canada ..its the one with the 20v head. Anyway, the bike started playing up missing and such..The symptoms are fairly odd...seems to lack power and kind of sound like its missing but not actually banging and clattering...just seems to kind of choke itself and lack power...occasionally it will miss out the exhaust when throttled hard. If Im riding along in this manner, choking along , no power, it occasionally flits back to running correctly for a second, then back to no power, sometimes it will run ok for  10 seconds or so...However if you get the bike into the powerband 6500 revs it will run fine under acceleration for 95% of the time...fast, full power etc, but as soon as you drop below 6500 it starts choking again. If I dip the clutch and get the revs back up it will take off again. With this in mind I cleaned the carbs,(maybe I didnt do this properly couldnt get the little jets out) and checked the coils at the local garage (they are fine)..This really feels electrical just by the way it kicks in for a few seconds ..like the sparks there again...Maybe its the pick up coils or the TCI unit...Anyway of checking these? The connections to the rgulator were also melted which Ive replaced with a new multi pin connector...Im not sure if this could create a problem but it doesnt seem to have changed anything...Any advice would be much appreciated as I cant get a manual for this bike and parts are scarce...Thanks Jon

Answer
Hi Jon,

Send me your email address as requested. I'll return information files on carburetor cleaning, tuning, and sychronizing. Send to: mshively1@woh.rr.com

The files are excellent reading for us MC enthusiasts.

I suspect the carbs need cleaned more thoroughly, respectfully. Review the files and see what I mean. The slow or pilot jets and circuits are obstructed. It may start and idle with choke, but stalls without? Each carb has air cut-off diaphragms on the sides. Careful not to get carb cleaners on the diaphragms. These usually need replaced with the age of the MC.

The original stator multi-connectors created high resistance and an occasional fire. :)

It's good that you managed this repair already. Keep dielectric grease on the connector (and all otheres, too).
