Motorcycle Repair: 1979 honda 750 sport, stator coil, regulator rectifier

Question
Hey Chris,
  I have a 1979 honda 750 sport that runs great
but the battery will not hold a charge.I have pu-
rchased a new one but no differance.Someone told me that it could be the stater.Where would I find
this on the bike and about how much would this part cost?

Answer
Hi Daryl.
 As far as cost, only your parts supplier knows for sure.  Sorry, but that's not my department.

However, the location of the stator is normally on the low side of the engine.

 There is a way to test it and here it is;

1)  Test battery with Hygrometer.  Any or all cells bad?  replace battery.  All cells good?  go to step 2.

2)  Check connections and check for shorted wires.  Repair any that you find and go to step 3.

3)  With battery hooked up and charged, start bike.  test charge with multimeter.  Charging at 13 - 15VDC?  problem fixed.  Charging below 13VDC?  stator coil is likely suspect.  Go to step 4.

4)  Using multimeter, check regulator/rectifier according to test proceedures in repair manual.  Regulator tests good?  replace stator. Tests bad?  Replace regulator/rectifier.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck.
