Motorcycle Repair: No Spark., honda shadow vlx 600, honda shadow vlx

Question
Hi Mark,
About 5-6 monthes ago I left my key on, killing my battery. a few days ago I put in a new battery, but now I have no spark at any plug. I ride a 1996 honda shadow vlx 600.
It has a front and a rear coil, and at both coils the black wire is hot with the ignition on.
Can the Ignition Control Module be tested off the bike? or do you think it could be something else?
The bike ran perfectly before the battery died.
Thanks for any advise,
Jason

Answer
Hi Jason,

Sorry to hear about the problem. I've left more than one ket on overnight. I suspect the same part may be the problem.

Some Honda dealers have the equipment to test electronics. You have to find a dealer who has the tools, and that can be a task. Honda dosen't list specs on the semiconductors used in their electronics, making MCM catalog or other product comparsion almost impossible.

I worked for two Honda dealers over the years, one of which was a volume dealership. Neither had the means to test electronics (they didn't buy the tool).

We would test the part with a known good part from the parts shelf or with a part from a new motorcycle.
