Motorcycle Repair: 1999 GSXR, gsxr 600, bench test

Question
HI CHRIS-I HAVE A 99 GSXR 600  THAT WILL NOT START.  I AM NOT GETTING ANY SPARK TO THE SPARK PLUGS IT STARTED OUT WITH EVERY SO OFTEN IT WOULD HAVE A HARD TIME STARTING NO MATTER IF IT WAS HOT OR COLD, AFTER THE BIKE STARTS IT RUNS FINE.  IS THERE ANY ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE ME TO CHECK ON ANY PART TO SEE IF I CAN FIND OUT WHERE THE PROBLEM IS.  THIS WOULD HELP OUT GREATLY SINCE I AM 45 MILES AWAY FROM THE NEAREST DEALERSHIP AND HAVE NO WAY TO GET MY BIKE THERE.  THANKS AGAIN-SCOTT

Answer
Hi Scott.
The problem is clearly in the ignition system.
You will need the repair manual to find this problem as the repair manual has the wiring diagrams for the entire bike.

Start by looking for anywhere that the wires could be arcing against the frame or engine.  Then check the ignition wiring for shorts caused by frayed, worn or clearly broken wires.  Next, you need to check the wiring for any invisible shorts and anywhere that it is grounding and should not be (you need to use a multimeter for this part).

Lastly, check the ignition components, including the spark plugs and plug wires.  The repair manual has bench test proceedures for the coils as well as specs on the coils.  If any components are not withing specs, then replace them.  But make sure that they are not within specs, first.

NOTE:  The ignition wiring goes to and from the switch as well so check the wiring to/from the switch as well as the switch itself.

Let me know how it goes.
Good luck.
