Motorcycle Repair: 1978 Bonneville brake repair, brake calipers, dry surfaces

Question
Thanks Brian. It does sound simple enough. What are the consequences of splitting the caliper? Which I already did! Also is a G clamp the same as a C clamp?

Do you have any step by step instructions or other information for rebuilding the brake calipers on a 1978 Bonneville T140E?

Thanks,
Mark

Answer -
It's simple enough Mark, just make sure you don't split the caliper (2 large bolts)You need a seal set and a decent G-Clamp, I remove the caliper (still attached to hydraulic hose, prise out the dustseal, pump the lever to force the pistons out, clean same, remove inner seals, and replace, using G-clamp to force pistons back home.Bleed hydraulic system to clean out air bubbles

Answer
Hi Mark, it's not really a big problem, it's just that the fluid channel seal can sometimes get damaged when they are split making fluid tightness difficult, if it looks fine then thoroughly clean, completely dry surfaces and reassemble tightening the bridge bolts to 37ftlb. Do check after refitting though that there are no leaks at maximum lever pressure. Yes, the 'C' clamp is the same item.
