Motorcycle Repair: 1954 Harley K Model, old bike, plug wires

Question
1954 K Model
Recently completely restored
New Carb , Sudco
New points,condensor,plugs,plug wires,coil
( pretty much everything new except motor/trans. )
Before the restore the bike sat for 17 years. Before restoring the bike was cranked and run. After 17 years the bike still started with only 8
kicks. After that it would start by the 3rd kick every time.Ran perfectly.

Since restore bike is very, very hard to start. Once it starts it runs fine and will start with in 3 kicks the rest of the day.

I am getting a good spark. Could the starting problems be related to the carb ?  Any suggestions or resources to keep this old bike running ?

Answer
Check your carb and make sure the float is correct. Here is how I usually start these bikes.
First set choke. With the ignition off, I kick the bike over about two or three times. Turn the ignition on and kick hard. If it doesnt catch then do the same thing again.
These older bikes are uaually tough to get started. There is no pumper in the carb so you are relying on the vacuumn to pull the gas in. Make sure the timing, points and plugs are right on.
Good luck and happy riding
