Motorcycle Repair: 81 Honda CB650 is it worth it?, 1981 honda cb650, rust free

Question
Falcon,

I am the orginal owner of a 1981 Honda CB650 with 1100 miles. It has sat in my garage for about 10 years now without ever starting (that's what 3 kids will do to a man!). The engine and suspension appear to be rusty as does a scratch on the gas tank.  I tried to start it a few years ago, but nothing happened. I was barely able to move it with the gear engaged, so the engine doesn't appear to be totally siezed, again, this was a few years ago.

The frame looks rust free, and the wheels appear to be ok, althogh the tires are most likely shot. I don't think 10 years of sitting is good for tires

Is it worth it to try to rebuild it and get it running again, or is it beyond repair?

Buying a replacement is not an option. If this is not fixable, my riding days are over.

thanks for your time.

Bill

Answer
Hi Bill.
As long as you use real care when getting the engine started the first time and nothing is really wrong, internally, I think that grand old lady can have a life to her again.

Put about a tablespoon of Marvel Mystery oil into each of the cylinders and leave it sit in there while you pull and thoroughly clean the carbs and get the rest of the bike ready to run.  When you have everything done and ready to go, just fire it up.  The Marvel will burn off and, barring any major internal engine problems, that part will be done and ready for being ridden.

You will want to reseal the tank and replace the fuel lines, as they will need it.  Outside of that, just make sure that you check everything to make sure that it will all work and look the way you want it.

Good luck.
