Motorcycle Repair: 1985 hONDA vt1100, electric fuel pump, honda vt1100

Question
Yo ,Ive got this bike its been sitting in the garage 6-7 years .NO spark no fuel ,i stripped it down to access the coils and electric moduals and the lower fuel tank.Im unable to get any fuel out of the lower tank, the dealer said there was a vacume diaphram in the system which i can not find in the manual or on the bike. The petcock is mounted to the sidwall of the lower tank ive removed it, and am able to run a wire up thru the outlet tube to the petcock port so its not plugged. the second petcock port in the tank seems ok,although its weird it has a metal tube extention into the tank ? Thank you for any advice you can provide.Steve

Answer
Not one of my specialities, but I checked the online microfiche cruiser section and see that the petcock does mount on the side. The section with the tube is for the main tank feed and the bottom one is for RESERVE, to drain the rest of the fuel when you run out on ON position. Fuel is routed through a fuel filter and then onwards to an electric fuel pump that may have a separate relay to activate it.

Filter is about $15 and the pump is $135 approximately. I have some recollection that the fuel pump will energize for a few seconds to fill the carbs, then waits for the level to drop before it activates again.

Petcocks on some Hondas do have vacuum diaphragms, but yours does not, from what I can see.

Be sure that the tank is clean inside and there are no restrictions. Check or replace the inline fuel filter, then check the fuel pump for power. Could have a blown fuse or fusible link, if it is not running. The pump could have seized up from sitting for such a long time, too.
