Motorcycle Repair: 1982 yamaha 650xj maxim, callipers, brake switch

Question
What am I looking at price wise to fix front brakes that do not work.  The current owner says the callipers were frozen, but thinks they are no longer.  Also, the master cylinder is broken.

Second question.  The brake light does not work for the rear brake.  How difficult is this to repair?

Answer
Hi Jeremy.

If you get used parts and do the work yourself, you may be looking at about a hundred bucks or a bit more.  About half the cost of new parts.  You may also need to replace all or part of the brake line, but that could be fixed if it's in good condition and the fluid hasn't turned to gel.

The brake light problem is likely to be just the brake switch.
Remember; 2 independent brake systems, 2 independent brake switches.
Check the wiring from power to the switch in question and between the switch and light.  Use a multimeter for this job.  Then test the switch itself with a multimeter.  If it's not the switch, then you have a shorted wire in that system.  If it is the switch, then just get a new one, not used.

Good luck.
