Motorcycle Repair: fuel, stroke bikes, local bike shop

Question
Hi. I have three 1970's vintage 2 stroke bikes for my kids to ride. I am always having trouble with rusting tanks (inside the tank). I have several questions. 1) Can I simple cut the fuel line and insert an automotive type cannister fuel filter?  Will the premixed gas and oil flow through OK or will the oil be filtered out? Will the flow rate be OK. 2) Is it worth it to coat the inside of the tanks with the various products I see on the web? I see a lot of talk about the coatings coming off. Your opinion would be appreciated.

Answer
Owen,

The Tank coatings work well if properly done.  Read the intructions VERY carefully.  The tanks must be ABSOLUTLY dry of all moisture and fuel.  I can't remeber the names of ones I've used but your local bike shop should have a good one in stock, A 2-part epoxy system.
You may use an inline fuel filter for your size hose bought at the same shop.  These are generic and made for all gravity feed fuel applications.  They use a very tight screen to filter out debris, not paper so they will not strain oil.

Good luck

Mike
