Motorcycle Repair: Redline and oil leaks, liquid gasket, shaft cover

Question
I have a 75 XLH Sportster 1000 cc. I have been unabe to find any information on the R.P.M. redline. I also have major oil leak problems. I am planning to replace the primary and cam shaft cover gaskets. Will a liquid gasket work in lieu of standard gaskets? Is there any brand you would suggest? Are there any special tools I will need?

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Randall

Answer
Your redline is around 6000 RPM, but I would run it there alot. You are picking up alot of vibration and the motor wont last to long at a sustained 6000 RPM.
No, do not use liquid gasket. Use the standard gaskets. I use James Gaskets in my shop. I have had great luck with them and I like them better than Harley gaskets.Use a gasket sealer when you put them on and you should be fine.
There isnt any special tools you will need to do the work you want.I would suggest getting a repair manual so you have somthing to follow while you do the work.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
