hello falcon,
I asked a question a while ago and got the best response from you, so here goes.
I'm a middling weekend wrench and do basic maintenance and repairs on my own bike, an 81 XJ650 Maxim. I've owned a number of different models, all Japanese.
My question is, and this might seem kind of dumb, which bike or bikes are in your opinion the easiest to work on? And I mean when dealing with whether or not you need to remove the engine, whether you need special tools, whether you need an extra set of hands, that sort of thing.
I'm currently looking for an old Japanese beater, something I can restore myself and was wondering which bike would give me the easiest time of it.
I'd prefer something from mid 70's to late 80's.
thx,
baz

Hi Baz.
Actually, about every bike out there has a certain degree of nuissance to it at some point or another.  But for my money, I have found that the 84 and newer Yamaha Viragos are relatively easy to work on and access.  But any of the mid/late 70's Hondas are also fairly easy to work on as long as you are familier with pre cdi box technology.

I hope that was some help to you.
Good luck.

Hello again, Falcon,
I'm glad you mentioned Viragos. I like Yamahas and the Virago is a real nice machine. I'll be looking for one. But in the meanwhile, I've got a chance to pickup a 1976 Honda GL1000. It hasn't run in a couple of years but is totally complete and has about 30,000 miles on it. Would it be a bike worth trying to restore, and how easy would the GL1000 motor be to access and rejuvenate?
thx again,

Answer
Hi again Baz.
Well, the GL does have a certain degree of hassle when accessing some portions of the engine, but at only 30,000 miles on the clock, that bike isn't even broken in yet so you shouldn't have much to repair outside of a few gaskets and the carbs and other things that are susceptible to the ravages of time and weather.

Good luck with it.
