Motorcycle Repair: touching up scratches, steven fry, touch up paint

Question
I've got a 2003 vs800 intruder and I have several scratches on the rad cover and front fender from stones. I have puchased the touch up paint and clear coat pens to repair these scratches. I have never done this before. Is there anything I should know before I do this?

Answer
Thanks for the question.
ON THE CHIPS:
The truth is, your not going to hurt anything. My best advice is just to try to keep the paint within the chip, (like coloring in the lines) If your still not comfortable, place some fine-line tape around the chip, apply the paint, then lift the tape, and do the same with the clear. Be sure to let the color dry completely before you apply the clear.
One thing that has helped me before is getting one of my wifes fingernail polish brushes. These brushes are usually high quality and MUCH better than the cheap brushes they give you with the paint.
ON THE SCRATCHES:
Be sure you have tried to buff or rub them out first before you go putting paint on them. A good rule of thumb is that if you can run your fingernail across them, and the scratch catches your fingernail, more than likely it will not rub or buff out. If you think they will buff out, get some wax with some grit to it, and a rag, and try to rub them out. This will take care of 80% of your scratches.
And one more thing, remember that 99 out of 100 people will not even see your chips or scratches on your bike, they  bug you because YOU know they are there. LOL

Hope this helps,
Steven Fry
