Volkswagen: VW Golf wiper relay, variable delay, sec delay

Question
1998 VW Golf GL Automatic

My intermittent front wipers stopped working.  The slow and fast work fine.  The dealership says it's the relay that must be special ordered.  I hate this dealership (it's the only one around) and I'd rather do this myself.

My wipers had one intermittent setting. Looking on the net, I hear that I can use a programable relay to replace it and get a variable delay. (TRUE?)

At one parts website (vwmart.com), they have a "Programable
Variable speed system. Reostat controled." relay that fits years 1997- . It is six-prong and will go from 0.5 to 20 sec delay (according to the print on the relay).  Does this sound about right to you?  Including shipping, it is about a third the price quoted by the dealer.

Last question. If that is the right relay for me, where is it located in my car? And is it just unplug the bad and plug in the new?

Thank you for your help.

Answer
the relay panel is located between the steering column and the "a" pillar. it does sound like a relay problem, and the variable relay does sound right. you should be able to unplug it and replace it, then all should be fine. you will need to remove the end cover where the fuses are, by gently pulling it out, then remove the torx 20 screws under the dash trim, and remove the outer cover. check and remove any other screws then pull off the inner trim. there will be another trim which needs more screws removing and will then come out easily. the relays are then visible.
