Motorcycle Repair: VFR700 Stalls off of choke, air leaks, fuel flow

Question
The moment I pull my 1987 Honda VFR700 off of the choke after warming it up, the bike stalls.  When I rev the throttle it sounds like the bike is being starved for power.  The engine will die if I do not keep either the throttle pegged or the choke enabled.  Any idea what my problem could be?

Answer
Hi Matt.
How often do you perform routine preventive maintainence?

The fact that you have to have the choke on to run the bike means that the mixture could be off.  This could be because the air filter is completely gummed up and needs cleaning/replacement or that there is an air lak in the manifolds or that the carbs are in desperate need of proper cleaning.

The way to test the manifolds for air leaks is simple.  Spray some ether (automotive starting fluid) at the manifold while the bike is running.  If the rpms go up, then you have a leaky manifold and you need to replace it.
Do this with both sides of all manifolds.

If the bike sits for the winter season, then the carbs need cleaning.  Complete cleaning.

There is also the possibility that there is a fuel flow problem.  If you have an inline fuel filter, then when was the last time that it was changed?  It could be way overdue or, if you don't have one on the bike, then you could have something blocking fuel flow.

Try starting with those.  Let me know what you find.
Good luck.
