Motorcycle Repair: Idle is too high, air fuel mixture, bandit 1200

Question
I have a '99 Bandit 1200, with a slip-on. I bought it used, and assume that it has a jet kit in it already. The main is stamped 105. I didn't see numbers on the needles. After cleaning the carbs, now it idles ok without the air filter. As soon as I put the filter (or air box cover on), it shoots to almost redline. While at idle, when hitting the throttle, it bogs down. The spark plugs are dark black, but not wet. I hope you can help with this. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Brent,

Black plugs = running excessively rich.

Idle shoots up to red line = describes an intake air leak or carbs need synchronized.

To check for air leak: Spray carb cleaner or brake cleaner around carbs and manifolds WITH COOL ENGINE to check for leaks. Carb spray is flamable-use caution. Engine rpm will increase or decrease (depending which spray is used) if leak is present

If leak is detected: Loosen carb manifold clamps and airbox clamps and reseat the carbs into the rubber manifolds. Tighten clamps and repeat leak spray test.

To check synchronization: Need sync tool...

After you get the idle problem fixed, carb tuning is necessary to get correct air-fuel mixture. You may need to clean carbs again and synchronize carbs.
