Motorcycle Repair: honda cb 175, honda cb 175, bench test

Question
Hello Chris,
I have a 1969 cb 175 k3 model.i have recently rebuilt the engine with new piston rings, cam chain etc, but am having trouble starting the bike, and when it does start only seems to run on one cylinder, ie the left side exhaust pipe gets hot, but the right hand side is cool.It has new spark plugs and the coil is not very old.i have set the timing and cleaned the points.Any ideas please. Thanks Graham

Answer
Hi Graham.
you could have a couple of things wrong here.

1)  Check the synchronization of the carbs.  If they are off enough, the bike will have difficulty starting and running.

2)  Chck the valve settings on that cylinder (gap and timing).

3)  Check the offending carb.  It could need a thorough cleaning.  Do both just to be safe.

4)  Check the wiring for shorts or grounding out anywhere between the coil and power.

5)  Bench test the offending coil as per the repair manual.  Match what your test results are against the specs in the manual.  If they are outside of perameters, replace it.

Start there and let me know how it goes.
Good luck.
