Motorcycle Repair: 1987 kawasaki 454, kelley bluebook, kawasaki en450

Question
I have found a bike for $400. It would be my first and I figure a good learning bike.  The problems are these: it hasnt been started in at least 4 years.  It has been sitting in a covered garage protected from the elements.  Just looking at it, it looks to be in good condition, nothing cracked etc.  The biggest problem that the owner knows of (this is someone I know and trust) is that the carburator is cracked.  How hard is it to put in a new one?  Is it worth it?  Does the system need to be flushed out?  If the tires arent cracked do they have to be replaced?  Thanks in advance for your help

Answer
Hi Jennifer,

Good price for a peppy little MC.

The carbs are very expensive if purchased new from a Kaw dealer. Find a used set from a salvage yard. Find a salvage yard on the internet by typing keyword variations of "motorcycle salvage." Replacing the carbs is a "do-able" task for the average motorcyclist. Just have patience, research the task prior, and have a buddy you can email with questions... Is it worth it? That's something you'll have to think about when you find and consider the price of carburetors. The Kelley Bluebook trade in value (in good condition) is $760.  See here---> http://www.kbb.com/kb/ki.dll/ke.kb.mr?kbb;801808;&;rc;t&29&1987;Kawasaki;EN450-A...

Check the fuel tank interior for rusting. The battery will need replaced. Coolant and other fluids should be changed. You may get by on the existing tires. I would want to put new tires on for safety reasons.

Keep in touch as necessary for assistance.
