Motorcycle Repair: 1968 Honda Model Numbers, ko models, product code numbers

Question
Hi Bill,
Thanks for responding to my other questions for my Honda 50. I also have a 1968 Honda CB450.I was wanting to know if i have my numbers right for ordering parts.Engine no.CB450-3002742,Engine no.CB450-3002757,Product Code no.292.Am I right that these product code numbers are for 68-69 models.Did the K1 models start in 70 or 68 and the KO models from 65-67.Is my model just CB or is there a letter for mine also.I Have looked all around and it is a little confusing. Thanks Again,Ken

Answer
Ken, Your bike is a K1 series machine.

The 3XXXXXX series chassis up to CB450-3008956 are K1s, after that they were K2s. K1 engines have 3XXXX numbers, but K2s have 31xxxxx serial numbers. K3s were both CB450-4XXXXXX.

Despite rather drastic differences styling changes between the K1 and K2, Honda used 292 product codes for both models. K3s were 319 code parts.

K1s were released 04/27/68, K2s went on sale 04/01/69. K3s came out on 03/01/70.
