Nissan Repair: 1988 Nissan 300ZX, nissan 300zx, spark plug

Own a 1988 Nissan 300ZX , have occasional starting problem. The car will turn over , you smell gas like it is flooded. The car has been starting fine. Cranked it yesterday , backed out of the shop , shut it off , went to get back in to crank and pull back it , the car just turns over.

Does the car act up when the engine is warm, cold, or does it matter? And, after cranking a bit, does it finally start, or do you have to let it sit a while?

Also, when it does not start, can you pull out a spark plug and tell me the condition of the electrode? If it is saturated with fuel, or dry and brown?
