Nissan Repair: engine stumble when accelerating, head gasket, question quest

Question
QUESTION: quest van 94 with vg30. When idling the engine is fine. however when accelerating the engine stumbles and struggles to come to speed. cap/rotor, cables, plugs replaced with problem continuing. Then recently head gasket to left side due to low compression #4 & 6 with problem continuing. Also the transmission o/d light is blinking 8 times showing its in safe mode. I'm attempting to get the engine running correctly to later diagnose the transmission. I'm not sure if both related or separate issues. Any insight please.

ANSWER: Hi Israel -

Have you tried testing the fuel pump?
There are 2 tests, pressure (should be about 45 PSI) and volume. The volume tests requires that the fuel line be removed and inserted into a container. Ignition on and when the fuel comes out 3 seconds you should have at least a cup of fuel.

QUESTION: Calvin,

My apologies for a delayed response. I didn't perform the pressure test. however I did perform the volume test. After 3 alligators, 2 time performed I only was able to pump > 1/2 cup of fuel.

Answer
Hi Israel -

I would say you need to replace the fuel pump. The fuel pressure test is important because it will tell you if it is indeed the pump or a clogged filter (you need to measure before and after the filter to determine this) You probably know the pump is in the fuel tank, so wait until the tank is at least 1/4 full and it will be less expensive as far as labor. Replace the fuel filter at the same time.
