Nissan Repair: 2011 nissan frontier - air quality, competent mechanic, nissan frontier

Question
QUESTION: When we have the a/c running there is a very musty smell.  Is there a filter that needs to be cleaned and where is is.  How do I get to it?

ANSWER: Hi Jill -

Yes. There is a filter called the cabin filter.

To get to it, the glove box needs to be removed, and you should see the filter behind it. Sometimes it helps to spray Lysol or some kind of disinfectant on the new filter before inserting it, so it helps neutralize odors. Also, when the filter is removed, you can see the evaporator core for the A/C. Ensure that is clean and not coated with sludge. The air that goes into the car passes through that and will pick up the smell also.

QUESTION: My husband took the glove box out and said there was no filter.  Do all models of the Frontier have that?

Answer
Hi Jill -

I did encounter one Frontier that had no filter. However usually it is there as standard inistallation. If you look closely, there is a space and capacity to install one.

You may take it to a competent mechanic and have one installed. That is probably why you are getting the smell.
