Nissan Repair: Sentra Instrument Cluster issues, odometer mileage, odometer reading

Question
gas, tact, speedometer, Odometer all drop off intermittently and come back.  Tapping on the console invokes the condition.  The ECU has been recording the U1001 CAN error and I suspect the cause is the short in the gauge cluster.

(Have you heard this story before?)

So I ordered a used cluster from a junkyard.  Question:  How can the odometer reading be transferred to the replacement cluster?

Thank You
Chris

Answer
Hi there, replacing the instrument panel will not solve the problem nor this is a short. A short circuit means that a positive and a negative charge come in contact together causing the the wiring of the affected circuit to overheat and starting to melt. That is why fuses and fusible links are used to interrupt the circuit thus avoiding further damage and a fire. An example of a short circuit is connecting one end of a cable to a battery's positive terminal and the other end to the negative terminal. The cable will spark and it will start to smoke as it gets hot. So if there is no device to stop this circuit, a fuse or a fusible link, you can guess what will happen next. The codes U1001 and U1000 indicate that there is no communication between the ECM and other control units which are part of CAN (Controlled Area Network). It seems to be a problem other than the instrument panel, like an open wire somewhere or a failing ECM (Electronic Control Module-the brain) The original problem needs to be identified by a qualified technician and repaired. Then, the instruments will work as they supposed to. As for transferring the odometer mileage reading, I don't know of any legal or technical way of doing that.
I hope this helps.
