Nissan Repair: fuel pump problem, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump relay

Question
hi there

I have a 1995 Nissan Serena Automatic SR20

And the problem was that it wouldn't start and i was told by a mechanic that it was the fuel pump so i replaced the fuel pump with a brand new one and it started fine but as i was driving after a while the engine just shut off and wouldn't start again so i gave it a minute or so and it started fine again then when i parked up at home and tryd to start it again after a few hours it started fine but bout 15 minutes after turning it off it wouldn't start again so i left it for a few hours and then tryd again and it started fine
and now this is the new problem
any help would be much appreciated
thanks

Robert

Answer
Hi there, sorry for the delay, I was out of town. The fuel pump system incorporates a fuel pump relay and a fuel pressure regulator. When you turn the key on, engine off, the fuel pump starts for 2 seconds to built up pressure and then it stops until the engine is cranked and started. By the symptoms you have described, looks like the relay is going out. To determine the cause, it is necessary to run some electrical tests to verify proper functioning of the pumps electrical system. We also need to check for trouble codes and see if the ECM receives a signal from the fuel system. If you are unfamiliar with these tests, I recommend that a qualified Nissan technician has a look at the problem. :)
