Nissan Repair: 2005 Maxima 3.5 SL trans problem, trans gears, transmission overhaul

Question
I have a 2005 Maxima 3.5 SL. The problem is when my wife got off the freeway today and stopped at the signal. The transmission stayed in high gear when she accelerated. The car remained in high gear each time she came to a stop. When she got home, I took the car for a drive and it did the same thing. I stopped the car and tried paddle shifting, the trans would kinda jerk. It felt like a lower gear but would not shift to any other gear when I tried it manually. I parked the car, waited about 5 minutes and drove the car again. The trans shifted fine. This same problem happened to my wife about a week ago. I took it to a mechanic and he could not duplicate the problem. The car drove/shifted fine until today.
Since the CVA trans are electronically controlled, would it be safe to say this is in the electronics and not the trans gears? Is there a particular electronic part to check?

Answer
Hi Curt -

If it is a sensor, I would say the VSS (Vehicls Speed Sensor), however that would cause the check engine light to come on. I am not sure whether it is or not, as you did not mention it.

Otherwise, I would check the transmission oil level, or even change it, and try driving it sgain.

If both of these issues come out negative, then  I would say a transmission overhaul is prudent.

Hope this helps
