Nissan Repair: thick oil smelling whit smoke emmision, nissan primera, thick oil

Question
Hi, I am quite confused regarding my 1.8 petrol nissan primera p12.
I can start the car and drive it four out of five days and its perfect then once every so often I start it and great clouds of white oil smelling smoke belches out of the exhuast then after a few minutes it seems to calm down ?. I now dare not drive it. ps I have had an oil and filter change but to no avail. Kind regards

Answer
Hi Steve -

I would replace the valve seals. Sometimes when the car sits for a while and if the valves are in a certain position, it will slowly leak oil into the cylinders, and when you start it you see it burning off. It is a slow leak, and that is why it goes away after awhile until it sits for a while again.

There is an additive called AT205 which is designed to expand rubber seals, thus possibly fixing the leak without any mechanical work, however I do not know if you have it there. Carquest carries it here.

Hope this helps -
aloha
