Nissan Repair: ABOUT MY 1996/97 MODEL MAXIMA, hick ups, nissan maxima

Question
QUESTION: Hello Mr Calvin.Good to have u back from vacation. Here are the complains i have with my Nissan Maxima 96 model.
1.Once i start the car in the morning. The gauge meter on the dashboard that shows the slow running of the car will not balance itself. It will rise above 1 and when its time for the engine to normalise itself.I observed a kind of Hick-ups on the meter. It will not balance like its jumping or fluntuating. After if the engine meter goes up again, whenever its time to slow down and normalise itself.it will do a kind of hick-ups again and the engine may go off.Except i raise the engine with the accelator that i might be able to drive it.Once its on speed it doesnt do the hickups but whenever the engine is on slow movement or in traffic it may occur again

Also if i park it for over 3-4hours and i need to use the car it will occur again.

2.The engine goes off most times whenever im in traffic or im driving slowly.

Pls advise on what to do.Thanks and God bless!

ANSWER: Hi Larry -

Can you tell me if the engine light is on?

When was your last tune up (Spark Plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor?)

This problem sounds electric vs fuel. Perhaps the ignition module in the distributor.

Let me know about the above questions so we can narrow down the problem -

Hope this helps -

QUESTION: Thanks Calvin. I appreciate ur prmopt response.I checked my plugs like 2weeks.but i dont know about the dist cap and rotor.I will ask my mechanic.I also replaced my fuel pump just 2 days ago. but the hickups in the slow running has not stopped. If this problem is electrical. what aspect needs to be checked? Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.Larry

Answer
Hi Larry -

It is what I mentioned.

Check for carbon tracks in the distributor cap. If the terminals inside are white with corrosion, replace the cap and rotor together.

The ignition module in the distributor is famous for failing when the engine heats up. If this is happening, replace that.
