Nissan Repair: clutch sensor on a nissan altima, clutch disk, nissan altima

Last night I came home and park. Now my car won't start and is able to shift without pressing the clutch. is this due to the clutch sensor? or the clutch disk is gone bad?

Need to verify -
If the car is not starting, how are you able to determine it is shifting without engaging the clutch?
If you are starting the car and engaging the clutch, are the gears grinding or does it just go into gear easily?

Thanks for the info. I hope you understand it is difficult to diagnose a car sight unseen, so the more info you can get me, the better.
